PRIORITY BUS LANES WELCOME

The Tasmanian Greens today congratulated the State Government on finally making the move to declare Tasmania’s first Priority Bus Lane following years of the Greens advocating such an initiative through successive Alternative Budgets, and their Submission to the Draft Climate Change Strategy. Greens Shadow Infrastructure spokesperson Tim Morris MP said that whilst the government’s announcement is only for a trial at this stage, Priority Bus Lanes in other places have demonstrated a proven improvement in efficiency and use of buses, and a reduction in commuters’ use of private vehicles.  “it is a significant breakthrough that the State Government has finally recognised that Priority Bus Lanes are appropriate for dual lane roads during peak traffic periods,” Mr Morris said.

“Through our Alternative Budgets, and our Draft Climate Change Strategy submission in 2006, the Greens have for years advocated for bus priority for the Southern Outlet in order to reduce dependency on private vehicles, reduce carbon output and allow the existing road infrastructure to operate more efficiently.” “Now that the Government has taken this enlightened step to introduce a Priority Bus Lane on the Southern Outlet it would be timely to put the Kingston bypass on hold until an investigation is undertaken to determine whether the introduction of ‘park and ride’ and ‘bus priority lanes’ can render that project unnecessary.”  “It is also time that Premier Barlett stopped carping on about the Greens being opposed to everything and acknowledged that this is a project that the Greens were the first and only party to promote until today.”.
